Little Freddie King

IMG_6155“Da King!”

At age 73, this authentic blues man exemplifies how true southern blues is played. Originally from McComb, Mississippi, Fread E Martin grew up learning how to play the blues. His father, Jessie James Martin, and his cousin, Lightnin Hopkins, were also blues guitarists. In the early fifties, Freddie moved to New Orleans.

I have had the pleasure to photograph Little Freddie at the Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival in 2012, and then again at the French Quarter IMG_6126-resizedFestival in 2013. Freddie is a fashionable and animated subject to photograph, and when you add the music, well, it ain’t nothing but a good time.

King was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010 and is a staple at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He performs regularly at the d.b.a. Music Club on Frenchmen St. and BJ’s Lounge in the Bywater on burgundy. You can check out his show schedule on his website:

There is an outstanding YouTube video by Joe McNally, a professional photographer, where King talks about his first guitar and how he made it out of a cigar box.
